Weddings: One of the greatest honors of being ordained is the chance to officiate ceremonies celebrated two people’s love and commitment to one another. My seminary training and ten years of ministry experience taught me that the Vows are central to the marriage ceremony. Even if a couple’s life before may not be planned to look different than after, the relationship is transformed in the speaking of the vows in the presence of the community gathered. Words are sacred. In Genesis, God speaks and all the beauty of the earth and cosmos come into being and God proclaims them good. This is where I start with couples in the understanding of the words they say in the ceremony as sacred.
Such reverence for language aligns with my love of literature and my background in writing and editing. I approach each wedding ceremony as a new work of art and engage the couple in conversation about what words are most meaningful to them for all parts of the ritual from invocation, readings, homily, vows and closing blessing. I find the premarital sessions with the couple to be an important preparation for their years of marriage and a meaningful space to reflect in the stressful period of event planning.
